My triumphant return to the Common has taken a severe blow.
Our tenants don’t want to buy the house (you can hardly blame them, in this market) and have gently pointed out that the tenancy agreement is for two years, not one. That means we can neither sell nor move back in until August 2010.
But what about the break clause? I ask in dismay. There is one, yes, but it’s a standard clause which works unilaterally in favour of the tenant in case they need to exit early.
Why on earth did we agree to that? Because we thought we were going to Hong Kong for three years, maybe four. Thrilled at the prospect of having let the house for a full two years it didn’t dawn on us we’d be the ones clamouring to get back in. Damn!
I spent last night scanning FindaProperty and PrimeLocation for a house to rent. All the nice ones are already let and there is very little of a size similar to the one we left.
So, I face the prospect of squashing my family into a tiny terrace with not enough room to swing a cat or else paying a fortune for a palace. Assuming we move back to a rental property and then into our house in a year's time we will have moved house 7 times in 14 years. Sigh.

There MUST be something suitable in the area. There just must.
Call in some favours. Get all your friends looking for you. I'm a great believer in networks.
Good luck that is also my fear that in this economy my husband company will pull the plug and send us back. I can't imagine living in our city but not in our home.
Well our house is up for rent in Clapham. But it is probably too small for your brood. It is 4 bedroom, but tiny garden. Email me if you are interested!
Don't panic. Breathe. We found what we thought was a perfect house here in HK to move into. It fell through and we found something even better. One door shuts and another opens. You just have to believe.
Jeez... I hope your husband's company is planning on paying re-relocation expenses.
I wouldnt worry about it/ For every time you move you get the chuck out more useless stuff you didnt need. My parents dragged us round the world, with similar moving statistics...try to aim for minimalism...(except let the kids keep their fetish objects, that's really important I found)
Oh NO! So very sorry.
From what I hear, anyway, you will find that there is some movement in the market in the next few months as families start to move for the new school year. Just keep your ears to the ground an as Iota says the network thing will definitely work in your favour. Put it out on TWITTER!
